Born of K'nar and Mayra, a brown and greenrider at High Reaches Weyr nearly 30 turns ago, Muriana has one full sister, Sherana (later Sh'rana, blue Abinth's rider) and goodness knows how many half-siblings. Unlike Sherana, Muri could not really cope with Weyr life and, having a talent for composition, was sent to the Harper Hall to apprentice.
Muriana spent many turns at Harper Hall, reaching the rank of Master before her 20th turn, her specialty being Theory. Eventually, she was named Craftsecond by then-Masterharper Jimm. The two masters became friends, and Muri wound up finding a firelizard egg and Impressing gold Harmony. It took her near-death from Richen's Disease to make her realize her love for Jimm. It then took her a couple of months to get up the courage to tell him, finally too scared by the idea that either of them could die before the knowledge could be disseminated. Jimm surprised her with a return of her love; and a few months later, she surprised him with the news that she was pregnant.
Unfortunately, during the course of her pregnancy, her beloved Jimm was lost in a landslide near Benden Hold. This struck a blow to Muriana's very being, for as their child grew in her belly, she took his place as Masterharper of Pern. Melody was born in the presence of then-apprentice Faeon and Masterhealer Maheradon. The pregnancy took a toll on the young Masterharper, and she could not bear to foster the child. Eventually, she stepped down as the Harper, leaving the craft in the care of Jendela, Kira, and Nefic. Muriana took Melody to High Reaches Hold, becoming friend to Lord Richen, the unwilling recipient of infamy due to the plague that nearly killed Muriana, and did kill a number of good people on Pern, after the Gather at Tillek where the plague broke out.
For a turn and a half, Muriana was happy at High Reaches Hold, acting as Hold harper. But Jendela's successor as Masterharper, Nefic, was lost at sea, and the masters begged Muriana to return as Acting Masterharper. She did so unwillingly, forsaking her daughter to help the craft through its transition. Quickly, she spied out that still-apprentice Faeon would make an excellent successor and began training him personally. It took all of six months, but she surprised the Hall at a formal dinner by pinning the Masterharper's knot on Faeon's tunic. She dropped a second bombshell by announcing her formal retirement to High Reaches Hold. Before anyone could recover, Richen (who was present as a guest of Muriana) surprised everyone (including her) by getting to his feet and proposing to her.
Muriana returned to High Reaches with Richen, and a turn later, they were married by Craftsecond Kira. Melody has become the Hold's heir apparent, and the rank has gone to her head. Mel's favorite thing to do is to scare the drudges by screaming up and down the Hold's corridors. Muriana spends her days tied up in Hold matters, keeping the Hold afloat side by side with her husband.
