Keralir was born to Keryn and Talir, two of the numerous staffers of Fort Weyr. He's lived around dragons and their riders all his life and doesn't bother slobbering over either. He's even been rude to one or another in his day, when they got in the way of his chores. They're just people, ya know?

For many turns, Ker was under the influence of a small band of the weyr's boys, most of them bullies and troublemakers. However, with the help of Calla, he got away from that crowd of candidate-wannabes. His parents were stunned when Misha's Bryth took it upon himself to search the lad. Ker himself spent most of his candidacy believing he wouldn't impress. After all, there were kids of Weyrleaders and Weyrwomen as candidates, and everyone knows that kids of riders have a slightly better chance than kids of generations of staffers.

Despite the wishes of the pack of bullies, Ker survived intact til the hatching, making friends with a number of the other candidates, including Alanore, her sister Elenore, Lissa, Malayla, Egrel, and Alcestia. When the day arrived, he was awakened out of a sound nap by everyone trooping into the barracks and chattering up a storm. Calla managed to get everyone into their robes and herded onto the sands in a mass of newly-sweating and nervous candidates. The first dragon, a bronze, hatched and managed to find his lifemate. Then a brown hatched and wandered the sands, ignoring some boy who tried too hard to catch his attention. A girl pushed Ker and went to the brown, but he practically ran her over to get to his newly-chosen lifemate. To Ker's everlasting amazement, he felt himself being twined with the new brown, who announced << My name is Gadrith, and I'm /hungry/! >>.

It was only after he recovered a bit and got Gadrith off to the side that he could watch the rest of the hatching, as Alanore, Malayla, Egrel, and Alcestia all joined him as weyrlings, with the latter two taking the names E'rel and Ces. For himself, Ker chose to become K'lir, and his parents were greatly thrilled to have their only son become a brownrider at the Weyr.
