The character's disposition.

Madelyne's disposition has three major 'phases' to it: The initial one until Scott leaves her to join X-Factor, the obsessed Goblin Queen one, and the recent one shown in X-Man.

First up, Madelyne's personality was stable until she met Scott Summers. She had no knowledge of her true past, but thought she was human. Things went a bit gonzo when she met Scott and he revealed himself to be a mutant. Still, she fell head over heels for him, and despite a few fights (like her decking him when he asked if she was Phoenix reincarnated), they got married, had a kid they couldn't figure out a name for, and lived happily ever after... not. After they were married for a bit, she was powered up as Anodyne and was kinda like a healer/den mother to the world, and this was aided by her then-announced pregnancy.

Madelyne's second personality phase was started off by Scott's choosing the team over her and her son. F'r example, when Scott chose to fight Ororo for the leadership of the X-Men, Maddy was rather pissed that everyone /but/ Scott called to see how she and Christopher were. Still, she was devoted to him. However, when Scott left her to rejoin the original X-Men as X-Factor, she told him to never come back. This really begins her 'anti-Scott' phase, where she hated him as much as she loved him. This got worse when she was kidnapped and nearly killed by the Marauders, and her son was taken (and she thought was killed). She is found and saved by the X-Men and she acts as if she's just a human, but secretly, she plots revenge against Scott for 'letting' Christopher be killed. She is obsessed with this, and she turns into a harlot, willing to commit adultery with Alex to get what she wants. She goes power-mad as the Phoenix Force powers her during Inferno, and winds up committing suicide in the hopes of killing Jean Grey in the bargain. It is this power-mad personality that manifests when Jean is captured by the Celestials.

Recently, Maddy showed up out of the blue in the pages of X-Man, hanging out with Nate Grey and Selene. She acted as if she was either running from someone, or someone's pawn (can you say Sinister? I knew you could). She was a bit confused, but still well aware of her past (Inferno, hatred of Jean Grey, etc.). Selene seduces her with power, and it's evident that the Goblin Queen portion of her previous personality phase is still around.

The character's background and history.

Madelyne Pryor is a clone of Jean Grey. It's unsure when Sinister made the clone of the X-Man, but one could presume it could have been as late as before Jean joined the X-Men. For creativity's sake, I'll say that when Jean's telepathic powers caused her to withdraw from her parents and everyone else following the death of her best friend Annie Richardson, one of Sinister's personae was a psychiatrist who was called in before Xavier was, and that's when he got the requisite cell cultures.

Madelyne was grown and invested with everything at Sinister's disposal that would cause Jean's mutant powers to surface in her. However, they did not, puzzling the expert geneticist. This all changed on the day that the Phoenix sacrificed its recreation of Jean on the Moon, and the Phoenix Force tried to revert to the real Jean in the bottom of Jamaica Bay. Jean rejected it, and so it turned to Madelyne, who cried out Scott's name, and manifested the Phoenix aura, destroying the medical bed she was lying on. Madelyne was quickly taken by Sinister and given false memories of another life, that of a woman who walked away from a fatal crash in Alaska on the same day as the Phoenix destroyed its recreation of Jean, and placed with the charter biz in Alaska ran by Scott's grandparents (Phillip and Deborah Summers).

Madelyne worked for the Summers' in an ordinary fashion until she met Scott, Alex, and their father, Christopher. She still had nightmares of the crash, but she was coping. She was attracted to Scott right away, and they spent a romantic weekend together in a lodge owned by a friend of Madelyne's. She discovered that Scott was a mutant the next day when she tried to take his glasses, and he hit her trying to avoid having his optic blasts exposed. She took a risk on him, and he explained about Jean to her, and she was stunned to find out that they looked alike (tho Marvel couldn't be bothered to draw them much the same ;).

Scott and Madelyne found some happiness in Alaska, but a bump in the road was hit when Mastermind tried to make like Dark Phoenix had returned, and Madelyne decked Scott when he asked if she was Phoenix reincarnated. Maddy wass then taken in by Mastermind, and transported to Westchester somehow. There, she nearly drowned in the wake of a mini-hurricane that Storm generated, but Scott resuscitated her, and proposed.

Madelyne was still playing the role of unwitting human when the two got married. They took off for a honeymoon in a wonderful little Grumman Goose, and nearly got made into lunch by a nice big octopus. Scott's power saved them, and they got away. They went back to live in Alaska, to work at the grandparents' charter biz. It was during a scientific expedition that the firefountain forces their plane down, and Madelyne is transformed into Anodyne the healer. She saves the others in the crash, and they move into the beautiful palace in the middle of summer grass in a valley surrounded by snow in Canada.

As Anodyne, Madelyne realized that she was pregnant with Scott's child, a son, a perfect son. When the X-Men and Alpha Flight showed up, ready for a fight, Xavier announced this, and Scott was like 'buh?' However, there were problems with the nature of the firefountain, and Madelyne sided against Scott in the ensuing fight until it was revealed that the firefountain drained all the magickal and creative energies of the world. Loki manifested and took away all the powers given by the firefountain. However, Madelyne begged to regain her power to save the life of one of the charterers from the flight, and Loki extracted a promise of servility from her before restoring her power. In the end, the firefountain was destroyed, and Madelyne reverted to a normal human.

Madelyne's pregnancy progressed as normal as Scott kept haring off on missions with the X-Men. Right before one of them, Scott got told off by Rachel, who took the code-name Phoenix, and Madelyne stayed behind as the X-Men went to Asgard after the New Mutants. While they were away, Madelyne gave birth to Christopher Nathan Charles Summers. The X-Men returned to earth, but to Paris for Magneto's trial. Madelyne watched it on the news, and was getting more and more mad, cos the other X-Men called to see how she was, and Scott didn't. When they finally came back to the house, Scott couldn't lay aside leadership, and Madelyne was further upset when he chose to participate in a duel with Storm over the team leader position instead of come back to Alaska with her. However, they left together when he lost. Scott fell into the father role, but Madelyne was increasing annoyed with him for not spending enough time and attention on her and their son.

Things culminated when Scott received a call from Warren, who said that Jean Grey wasn't dead after all. Madelyne told Scott that if he left to go after Jean, that he was never to come back. He left, and Madelyne started taking steps to keep him out of her life. However, her efforts were superceded when Christopher was kidnapped by the Marauders, and she was nearly killed by them. Amnesiac, she surfaced in San Francisco. She was found by the X-Men and taken in by them.

The next major event of her life was when she stood with the X-Men in their conflict with the Adversary. In Denver, she and Scott's brother Alex started getting close, two survivors of tragedy. In Dallas, She offered to be Dazzler's eyes when Spiral magicked a mask onto Alison's face. She was included in the 9-person spell that locked the Adversary away, and to the world, she had died. Roma resurrected the X-Men and she was included in her spell to give them invisibility from technological devices (cameras, tape, security devices). She relocated to Australia with them and started puttering around the the extremely advanced computers left behind by the Reavers, the ousted previous members of the base they'd commandeered.

It was at this time that the next phase of her life began. She found tapes of X-Factor in the computer, and resolved to get revenge on Jean Grey for stealing Scott from her. It was then that she received a dream of her making a pact with N'astirh, a demon lord of incredible power. She began using the computers of the base to edit out certain information on X-Factor, making them look even worse to the X-Men as mutant hunters. She also seduced Alex, overriding his protests that she's his brother's wife. Then, she dressed up in her slinky attire and set out to regain her son, whom she'd found out was still alive.

As the Goblin Queen, Madelyne enslaved Jean Grey's parents John and Elaine, turning them into demons, and went after Sinister at his base in Nebraska. He captured her, and told her the truth about herself, that she was Jean Grey's clone, etc. and about how when Jean turned up alive, he'd had the Marauders try and erase her existence by kidnapping Christopher and killing her and wiping all records to her existence. Madelyne realized that Sinister had screwed up, and she used the power of the Phoenix to make sure that no one would control her again. She escaped Nebraska and fled to New York with Christopher, where she changed back to her flight suit and got X-Factor on her tail. X-Factor ran across the demonized X-Men, and there was a fight. Madelyne transformed back into her Goblin Queen attire and took off with Christopher, and Alex chased after her and became her Goblin Prince. The X-Men and X-Factor finally sorted things out and team up against her. Christopher called out to Jean telepathically, and the combined X-teams took out N'astirh.

However, Inferno was not ended with the end of N'astirh. Madelyne captured Jean. The X-teams saved her. Madelyne jumped into Jean's mind and attempted to commit suicide and take Jean with her. When this failed, Madelyne turned into a personality with Jean's psyche. She next surfaced with Jean's psyche was shattered by the fight with the Celestials. In the end, Jean's psyche was healed, and presumably, the Phoenix' and Madelyne's personalities were destroyed.

Not so. Madelyne resurfaced again, this time in the Alps. She was confused, but runs across Nate Grey. She convinced him that perhaps they were fated to meet, that she's valuable to him. He commented that she looked like Jean, and she decked him. She implied that she could feel his evil (leftover empathy from her Anodyne days, no doubt). It was also implied that Madelyne is either running from or working for someone else, most likely Sinister, since he's got a hold of the cell cultures that made her first body.

Madelyne continued to try and sweet-talk Nate, when Selene showed up and tried to seduce Madelyne with power. The Goblin Queen portion of her psyche jumped at the chance and Madelyne ran off with Selene, claiming recognition of something about her. Selene told her that if she stayed with Nate, she would have destroyed him.

When she returned, she managed to cut her hand to the bone, and had no pain, no awareness of it, and the blood took awhile before starting to spurt. This furthers the theory that this isn't Madelyne's original body, which had completely human sensations.

The skills (non-powered) and resources (monetary and social) of the char.

Madelyne is a pilot, having worked for Scott's grandparents' charter biz in Alaska. She can fly it, take it apart, put it back together, and basically keep it in the air even if it's just a rubber band and a couple of sticks.

Madelyne also has a great deal of knowledge with computers and electronic tech from the X-Men's days in Australia hanging in the old Reaver base. If it has circuits, she can probably jockey it into singing 'Oh Canada'.

A description of the character's power(s), power limits, and drawbacks.

Madelyne is distressingly mortal. :) She does have normal human empathy, tho.

However, she used to have powers.

As Anodyne, she was given the power to heal any injury with flames. The drawbacks to this power were a: it was donated by Loki, and b: because it came from the firefountain, all creativity was banished in its use, and magickal creatures sickened and died near it.

As the Goblin Queen, Madelyne had access to the full power of the Phoenix. She also had considerable arcane powers. There were precious few limitations to these powers. However, her Phoenix-given telekinesis was strictly line-of-sight. Her telepathy was unskilled, as well. It's implied that the tp/tk are latent as she's a clone of Jean, but w/o the PF to activate them, she's essentially human.
