Lady Elizabeth Braddock was born in Braddock Manor with her twin Brian on 23 April, 1956. The twins had a fairly normal English childhood, ganging up on their elder brother Jamie fairly often when he was around. Betts herself grew up to become one of Britain's most famous models and aristocrats. However, Elizabeth was also a mutant, and this fact changed her life. Through the computer in the basement of Braddock Manor, Betts learned that she was not human, but a human/Otherworld hybrid, for her father, Lord James Braddock, was one of Merlin's guards. The fact that she was a telepath made it clear that Betts inherited more of the Otherworld genes than did Brian.

Betts spent much of her early adulthood hobnobbing with the rich and elite of Britain. She was a somewhat frequent visitor to Queen Elizabeth, and was known for her charity works. However, things changed when Apocalypse took over North America. Most of England's society were immediately put on guard. Still, America's heroes weren't apparently enough to stop the ancient Egyptian from creating international havoc. England needed a hero like Captain America in World War II. Betts was attacked late one night on her way back to Braddock Manor. Merlin and his daughter Roma manifested to her, demanding she pick the Sword of Might or the Amulet of Right. Betts chose the Amulet and became Captain Britain.

Betts spent her public life thereafter trying to work to help England, being an outspoken critic of Apocalypse and his regime, but not so outspoken as to invite attacks or reprisals from the regime. As Captain Britain, she could do more for the cause of preserving England. She was extremely careful about letting anyone know about her dual identities, but of course, she couldn't keep her brother Brian from knowing, because of their special bond as twins. Still, no one other than the Queen knew that Lady Braddock was also Captain Britain.

Presently, Betts serves her country as Captain Britain and as Lady Braddock, fighting both overtly and covertly against Apocalypse and his goons. With the execution of her patron, the Queen, Betts has now got a personal reason to keep up the fight. With no figurehead leading the traditional English monarchy (they executed Charles and the rest of the royals, too), the aristocracy has moved up one notch. Some members of the peerage are happy to kiss the butts of Apocalypse and company, but some strive to retain their sovereignity and freedom, as Betts does.
