The online world has provided an opportunity for people to escape the boundaries, the restrictions, the mores and rules of the communities of people in the "real world" and disappear into a world of fantasy. Certainly there is and always will be a place and role for that. But at it's worst, online communities have sometimes become faceless dances of role-plays between made-up characters, where every 13-year-old hormone-possessed boy poses behind an alias as a curvaceous supermodel, a place where every behavior is permitted and no standards apply, where the lowest common denominator rules and you don't truly know anyone better at the end of the day than at the start.

This is not rasfwr-j.

One of the most rewarding aspects of life on rec.arts.sf.written.robert-jordan is the community of unique individuals who, in the truest sense, gather within it. Rasfwr-j is a place where you know most everyone's real name. Their homes. Their jobs. Their politics. Their beliefs. Their spouses and kids. Rasfwr-j is a place where people trade phone-numbers. Jaunt-cross country to visit and revel together. Learn bunches about things you never knew about from people who do it for a living. Get into violent arguments. Fall in love. Rasfwr-j is college and high-school and Law and Medical students. Engineers. Mothers. Librarians. Scientists. Professionals. We come for the Wheel of Time. We stay for the people. Real people. Real lives. Real relationships.
